Let us know about the life of Saint Francis Xavier, the servant of the Lord, from the beginning. He was born in Spain in 1506 AD. With the help of King John III of Portugal and the Pope, he was made a missionary and sent to India on 7 April 1541 AD and reached Goa on 6 March 1542 AD, which was under the authority of the King of Portugal. After doing missionary work in Goa, he went to Madras and Ravan. After doing missionary work here, he went to the Malay Peninsula in 1545 AD to preach this religion. He did missionary work for 3 years. He met a Japanese youth named Hanjiro in the peninsula. This youth was influenced by the preaching of Saint Xavier.
In 1549 AD Saint Xavier reached with this young man. Despite not knowing Japanese language, he preached for 2.5 years with the help of the young man and made important Christian believers. From Japan, he returned to Goa in 1552 and after some time reached Chan, an island in the south-eastern part which is near Macau. He died due to fever. Egyptian society gives him a place of great importance and he is considered a symbol of respect and honor because he was a man of devotion and religious nature. He was a true missionary. Saint Xavier preached Jesus Christ in 52 different states in just 10 years of missionary time. It is said that he preached by roaming in an area of 9000 miles and made lakhs of people disciples of Jesus Christ.
The dead body of Saint Francis Xavier is still kept in the Church of the Cathedral of Bom Jesus. According to Goa, this body is kept for darshan every 10 years. This body was taken out for darshan for the last time in 2014. The body has been kept in a glass coffin. Even today this body has not decayed. There is a popular story that before his death, Saint Francis Xavier had separated his hand from his body due to his divine powers. He had kept this hand as his identity for the delegation of saints coming from Rome.
Along with this, he had also given a letter to his disciples. Even today, the separated hand is present in the church. The immortal body of the saint has been mutilated many times. In 1553, when a servant was taking his immortal body from Sinkiang to Malacca, he tore off the flesh of his knee to give proof to the captain of the ship. In 1554, a Portuguese female traveler cut off the flesh of his heel and took his holy relics with her to Portugal as a memento. The heel of the saint’s wing got separated and was kept in a crystal sheet in a crater of Basilica.
In 1695, a part of the saint’s arm was sent to Rome, which was installed in the Church of Gesture. A part of the left hand was installed in the Sweet Praveni of Japan in 1619.
